Nathan Groot, viola

Nathan Groot is a violist, Presidential Fellow, and doctoral student at the University of Georgia. He is originally from Tennessee and earned his bachelor’s degree in viola performance from Tennessee Technological University in 2017. In 2019, he graduated with his master’s degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. While in Tennessee, he frequently performed with the Bryan Symphony Orchestra and the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra. In 2018, he was invited to perform as a guest soloist with the Sofia Sinfonietta for the Sofia Music Weeks Summer Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria. He also studied with Thomas Riebl and performed in Bad Leonfelden, Austria and attended Brevard Music Center in the summer of 2018. Nathan has performed in studio recordings for television soundtracks in Nashville, TN and with Kishi Bashi in Athens, GA. Nathan is also very passionate about teaching privately and coaching chamber music. He has taught private lessons in Tennessee, Ohio, and Georgia for eight years, worked as viola faculty and chamber coach at the Tennessee Tech Summer Music Institute, and coached chamber music for the Community Music School in Athens, GA. He also loves collaborating with others and performing in chamber ensembles. The University of Georgia Viola Ensemble, which Nathan coordinates and performs in, won an invitation to the American Viola Society Festival Ensemble Invitational Competition. As a graduate researcher, Nathan is especially concerned with lack of access and inequalities in art music and music education. In 2020, he joined the nonprofit, Lift Music Fund, as a member of its Founding Team.
