Dan Phipps, a native of Rockland, MA is an emerging concert saxophonist and educator based in Athens, GA. As a soloist, Dan has won first prize at the state round of MTNA Young Artist Competition in Georgia and Massachusetts and was a winner of concerto competitions at the University of Georgia and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, performing Fantasia by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Symphonic Rhapsody by John Anthony Lennon, respectively. As an educator, Dan received UGA’s Excellence in Teaching Award for his work as a teaching assistant teaching Aural Skills I and II. He aims to perform works that demonstrate the conflicting conditions of society, most recently collaborating with composer Badie Khaleghian to premiere his saxophone concerto, Debilitator, an intensely personal piece embodying the phenomenon of loneliness in modern society. Currently, he is working towards the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Georgia. Dan holds a Master of Music in Performance from the University of Georgia and a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His primary teachers include Connie Frigo, Jonathan Hulting-Cohen, Lynn Klock, and Felipe Salles.
