The Lawrenceville-Suwanee School of Music String Quartet is a group of young female chamber musicians who are dedicated to the exploration of the music produced by the four Venetian Ospedali. These famous institutions are perhaps best known for their association with violinists like Antonio Vivaldi and composers like Baldassare Galuppi. While these and other composers were employed in the Ospedali their task was to instruct the young women who were the wards of these institutions. While many of these students left their musical studies behind for the domestic realm when they entered adulthood some did not. Our goal is to explore the music of women like Regina Strinasacchi, Maddalena Laura Sirmen, and Anna Bon who pursued musical careers after their time in the Venetian Ospedali. As this was music written by and for young women, we try to maintain that tradition by forming our ensemble with (primarily) young women who might (in different circumstances...) have been members of an Ospedale themselves.
